New Measures of English Language Proficiency and Large-Scale Assessments: Presentation and Discussion
The webinar begins with a presentation of key findings from the newly published REL-NEI Issues & Answers Report "New Measures of English Language Proficiency and Their Relationship to Performance on Large-Scale Content Assessments", which found that student performance on the English language domains of reading and writing on the ACCESS for ELLs proficiency assessment are significant predictors of performance on reading, writing, and mathematics assessments on the New England Comprehensive Assessment Program (NECAP). The report serves as a foundation for a discussion on the implications of the findings for state education agency (SEA) officials, Title III and curriculum, instruction, and assessment specialists involved in assessments and overseeing direction of instruction. A discussant will address instruction and assessment. The Webinar is scheduled for Wednesday, July 22nd from 12-1:30 PM Eastern Standard Time. New Professional Learning Module on Culturally Responsive Literacy
The National Center for Culturally Responsive Educational Systems (NCCRESt) is a federally funded project focused on providing technical assistance and professional development to close the achievement gaps between students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and their peers. NEA has collaborated with NCCRESt on several projects, including the development of the Truth in Labeling: Disproportionality in Special Education guide (available for purchase from the NEA Professional Library or free download at http://www.nea.org/specialed/nearesources-specialed.html.) A new NEA policy brief about disproportionality is available at http://www.nea.org/specialed/disproportionalitypolicybrief.html. And, information for parents is available on-line at http://www.nea.org/specialed/parentques.html. One strategy to reduce disproportionality is using culturally responsive teaching practices. NCCRESt has just published its latest online module on Culturally Responsive Literacy. This module addresses the changing definition of literacy and its role in each of the core content areas. All the materials for presentations (e.g., see slide, right) and collaborative learning activities are organized into 3 academies that focus on: Defining Culturally Responsive Literacy and the multiple purposes of literacy in students lives Exploring features of Culturally Responsive Literacy Instruction Crossing boundaries of cultural differences in the classroom by creating literacy experiences for all students Download this module at
http://nccrest.org/professional/culturally_responsive_literacy.html. If you wish to order a printed version of this module, you may access NCCRESt’s online order form by going to http://www.nccrest.org/orderform.html
